On Our Radar: A New Podcast for Your Ears
Unladylike is a mix of storytelling and feminist commentary focused on finding out what happens when women break the rules. It just launched yesterday and we are *here for it*. Aussie podcast producer Clare Rawlinson gives us the rundown on what we can expect.
Our pilot episode investigates what it takes for women to pay for an abortion [ed's note: v timely given our Tasmania explainer above]. Like all our episodes, we aren’t interested in having a debate about the morality of the choices women make (e.g. when is abortion right or wrong? *eyeroll*). Instead, we try to focus on a woman’s experience living her unladylike life, whatever that may be!
Other episodes investigate why women on bicycles face a different kind of street harassment to those on foot, and what it takes for a woman to break the bronze ceiling (eg. get herself a statue, y’know).
What I love about this show is that it captures the universal experience of being a woman, while also asking how a woman’s experience will differ depending on her identity across class, race, ability, sexuality, etc.
Also, there’s an episode I recorded in Australia that will likely air towards the end of our first season. I hope it does Aussie women proud to bring some of our stories overseas on the podcast universe!
